Такого у нас еще не было в галерее: Лотерея Серебряного Всадника
Так и не понял, как этот девайс использовлся (для награждения?
), но сам исторический контекст потрясающе интересен:
This Dutch Rider Dollar or Ducaton from Utrecht has had its obverse smoothed and expertly engraved with: "Op. No. 1137 den 1 Novembr 1796 Getrokken door L.J. Ein Amerikaansche Premie Groot (G) 30000." Loosely translated this inscription reads: “Number 1137, On November 1st 1796, Drawn by LJ, An American, Prize of 30,000 guilders.” A fascinating piece that suggests the close commercial ties between the early American republic and Holland. Many Americans were in the Netherlands in the 1790s as trade connections between the two nations grew. This process began in 1782 when John Adams was appointed as U.S. Envoy to the Netherlands. The identity of LJ, the winner, is unknown, but the premium he received is likely a payment from a lottery. This piece shows pleasing peripheral toning and is housed in a silver beaded frame of contemporary manufacture. Clearly this was a prize of some importance, and the fact that LJ was "ein Amerikaansche" was a fact of some importance. Engraved pieces from this period, especially European ones which relate to Americans, are scarce, particularly so in crown size. This piece, certainly unique, is a great find."
