POLAND. East Prussia. Silver Tankard, ND (After 1651, Likely Early 18th Century).
Sides, lid, and bottom of tankard inset with 17 Talers and Klippes struck at Elbing before or during the reign of John Casimir (1649-1668). Most are Polish, with three Talers of the Swedish Possessions in the region. The last visible date of the coins is 1651. The overall weight is 1441 gms and is 20.5 cm tall. Maker’s mark “S T” divided by handle on the body and on the lid. Handle is beaded and curved, and is of fine style.
The coins are as follows: 4 Klippe Talers of 1651; 10 Talers dated from the 1630’s to 1651; 3 Swedish Talers dated 1636. All the coins that are inset in this tankard are VERY RARE; many of these have not been auctioned in many years. It is likely that piece was made soon after the coins were minted, as the interior of the tankard shows high grade pieces, showing little to no circulation. The exterior has been polished many times over the centuries, and thus the pieces are flat and have lost definition, however each piece is completely identifiable, and recognizable as a significant coin in its own right.
A very handsome piece of extremely fine manufacture and museum quality. The tankard is in fine condition, the lid in good working order, with no readily apparent signs of repair. Possibly unique and perhaps the only way that some of these issues can be obtained by the specialist, thus of the utmost importance to the advanced collector of Polish numismatics.
Estimated value: 50000 USD
